The fixed camera locations are marked on all new French routier maps, I think there is also a legend for the zones for the itinerant mobile Dalek ones.
The departements publish a website showing the fixed camera locations and the dates, times and areas where mobile units will be operating, it's also published in the local papers.

I thought radar detectors were illegal, this is for sale on ebayuk looks like not only a dash camera but says it picks up mobile radar traps? Edit Looking for a dash cam and something legal to pick up fixed cameras. ebay dashcamA 'radar detector' is useless as you are already clocked by the time the alert bleeps. A sat nav with fixed camera locations can be used but needs regular updating. I have a Garmin sat nav in which an SD card with whatever 'points of interest' you wish to include can be inserted. In the UK it's legal to have camera locations on a sat nav so I use an SD card and pocketgpsworld app which can be updated regularly with the latest locations. It's probably the most accurate of its kind. It also has the French cameras available to download but it relies on reports submitted for updates. It's often reported that the French police need a search warrant to view the content a suspect device.
Most sat navs sold in France include the official zones of danger some of which are dozens of kilometres in length.
radars-auto will open very detailed information about French speed cameras including a comprehensive map of their locations.
pocketgpsworld is where speed cameras can be downloaded for a small fee. Report a camera will get a free year's subscription. (I'm up to 2036)

The mention of legality above is interesting. I'm pretty certain that some years ago I was "reading" a French car magazine that was listing where the fixed radar cameras were located, new ones being added when installed. Christ! Even my local paper publishes the locations of all the fixed cameras throughout the département The bugbear is going to be the mouchards in plain cars which we are constantly being promised. Hopefully, the technology available will pinpoint those also, though.

It was a toss-up between promised and menaced....irony won I wonder if we'll see a sort of repeat of the collaborators during WWII?

I am a member of a FB group that regularly updates their locations.

Excellent! Putting social media to good use. Are there particular signs to look out for, Dominic, or is it a case of the unlucky victims posting details after the event?

The last Michelin road atlas I got has the positions of fixed cameras marked. What is a road atlas?

The routes used are a set pattern which may help and the larger 'marge de tolérance' for the mobile-mobile units may influence the number of AdCs issued.
French TV programme(s) available on youtube show the gendarmerie tracking people who use mobile phones to report police activity. I'll see if I can find one and post a link ("Gendarmerie sur l'A6" and "A6 - Autoroute du soleil"?)
