Is it just me, or are flies much more aggressive this year? Both in France and here, they are flying at me and keep on coming even if you flick them away.........
Or have I have too much wine, and i am imagining it

You are right. Even the little wimpy ones are aggressive this year. Usually its the big buggers that bite and leave an itchy lump that keep coming back for more.

Two possible solutions: Wear long-sleeved T shirts and cotton trousers, or spray skin with anti-mozzie stuff. Oh, and the taons (horse and cattle flies) bite through T-shirts, but they can read, and they recognise a can of Raid when they see one! Whooosshhh!

I get bitten by small black buzzy flies, you feel a nip but thankfully they don't leave a mark. They're just annoying. We get loads of them but we are rural. This year no fly screens, spray or tapes have helped.

Our Red Top fly catcher already contains about a kilo of flies and its only been up a few weeks.

We find that the biting flies are worse after it rains - keeping the grass really short around the house seems to help as the sun can dry up the ground faster. I believe the flies lay their eggs in damp ground and they hatch out when it rains, mate, bite as blood proteins nourish a good supply of eggs to lay in the damp ground, and so the cycle repeats itself.
