I tried calling HM Revenue yesterday, but lost the will after hanging on for what seemed an age.
I seem to remember back in all the brexit nonsense, that once the UK floated off, it would not be possible for a foreign visitor to physically buy something in the UK to take out of the UK and claim back the VAT - does anyone remember this, or better know for a fact if it is possible.

Reading what you linked to exile suggests that only those who are leaving the UK to somewhere outside the EU can claim it back:

It could be, but it is copywrited for 2022 - which in itself is not conclusive just indicative.

Not sure, but thanks Elsie - it depends when it was written. I seem to remember that VAT refunds were not going to be allowed to EU after brexit, in which case your link is good. It is a real nuisance that on the one hand EU is an extrernal entity but residents cannot get refunds as is the case everywhere else. I have sent an email to HMRC for clarification. I will post the reply when it comes. I still wish a plague of locusts on the numbhead brexit voters

That is the UK government web page giving the latest information.
If you buy something from Amazon UK, which is fulfilled by them for delivery to France, they do all the work of removing UK VAT, adding French VAT and import duties. There will be nothing additional to pay.
Some other large organisations will do the same. Smaller companies are less likely to want to be involved in all the administration. You may still end up having to pay import duties and the associated service charges.
You will possibly find other companies who know nothing about the VAT forms which need to be completed, etc. So you need to ask beforehand. I doubt you can buy something and bring it into France personally rather than getting it despatched directly.

French TVA is the same rate so unless the intent is to smuggle into France VAT refunded goods what is the benefit?

Ebay similarly do all the work when their Global Shipping Plan is applied but not if the seller ships directly.
