Had to buy some today at Leclerc as there were no fresh ones, not sure when the season is here?
Do the French people buy them? or are they considered second rate? They seemed OK cooked in white wine and cream tonight.....but its a while since we had fresh ones here.......

We rarely get fresh ones here being relatively far from the sea, so it's 100% vacuum packed and they seem to sell fairly well.

We get the vacuumed ones a lot and they're just as good as fresh.

Can’t recall the last time I bought loose mussels. The packed mussels lately, from the Irish Sea from Grand Frais have been delicious.

We had a bad experience with vacuum packed mussels, we were so ill for a few days. So I am not allowed to buy them. It was always the rule to buy them in months with an "R" but in Brittany were the buchot mussels are farmed that is being stretched, we were eating fresh mussels in July, August all from Brittany.
My favourite recipe is either red thai or green thai mussels, buy a tub of the paste from most big French supermarkets and Asian food shops. Add onions and thyme and coconut milk (or in our case creme entier) all cupboard goods. So when they are on offer at just over €3 per kilo, you have an instant meal to mop up with baguette.

Plenty in the supermarkets here in Brittany. I dare not touch them, I steadily developed an allergy to them before I arrived in France.

Never had a problem, in fact I prefer them as they’re much cleaner. My brother took some back to the uk on the plane he was so enamoured of them, I wondered if he would face any problems at the airport but he didn’t.

Not so sure that vacuum packed mussels will be as good as buying fresh mussels from the bay of Mont St Michel where they have been granted L'appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC)which I believe is the only region in France where they have been granted such status. Out later in the year than most others, mid July but will run until later in the year and often overlap the oysters from the same area. We live around 20/25 minutes from Cancale...
