Does Europe and the UK have air marshals on flights or is that just a US thing?

It's a secret according to Wikipedia which notes that the UK service was created in 2002 and is operated by SO19. Oops.

It's a secret according to Wikipedia which notes that the UK service was created in 2002 and is operated by SO19. Oops. FWIW the info on wiki about the UK set up seems to be a description of what the UK Gov desired/planned to introduce in 2002. When that announcement was made many in the industry, especially those ultimately responsible for passenger safety and their employers, were slightly unhappy with quite a lot that was being suggested. Airlines alarmed……It’s interesting that as wiki points out that 20 years later you hear nothing or next to nothing about the scheme? Whatever the current reality of sky Marshall’s on routine UK flights I do know that when I was working the only time I was actually made aware of weapons in the cabin was when we carried a VVIP. The accompanying Protection Officers had firearms and it was a requirement that the aircraft commander was informed….had a quick word with them on boarding, professional guys who unlike some in their line of work managed not to leave their Glocks unattended. Ooopppps

" For mutual protection, these vessels travel together, each escorting the other. They are fitted with fixed naval cannon and have other additional physical protection systems, only some of which are visible from outside.
For shipments of MOX fuel and plutonium, armed officers of the CNC provide on-board protection from departure to arrival. The CNC officers are specially trained to protect nuclear materials during sea transit, as well as nuclear facilities."
Do you prefer this one?

ibis , by and large, terrorist attacks in the UK and mainland Europe are perpetrated by home-grown individuals. I'm not saying extra security would be a bad thing, but surely there are better places to deploy what are effectively spare police officers. They aren’t spare police officers because they cannot do the same job as a home office police officer, their training is completely different. I know someone who joined CNC as they were the only service recruiting at that time,he didn’t last long and left to join a home office service but had to do his full training again, although his background would give him an advantage if he wanted to become a firearms officer .CNC are essentially armed security and not police officers

Well, the French police are being impressively zealous in their security at Ouistreham at least... At 8h this morning, before departure, they hauled me and my car in for a scrupulous going over; inspected beneath every seat, poked around in the boot, x-rayed my suitcase, and finally gave me a zealous patting down back, front and sides. Clearly they had been tipped off about an elderly lone female traveller in a humble VW Polo.

With all the violence i have seen written toward the present government in the UK on expat forums from immigrants to France maybe they have a reason.
