The German Magazine "PC-WELT" just mentioned that automatic Windows updates are not always as automatic as you might suppose: " Under the term "Update Connectivity", Microsoft determines the time that Windows devices are switched on and connected to the Windows update server. Microsoft had thus found out that devices that are not connected for a certain time are very likely not to be updated successfully. The data would show that devices must be connected continuously for at least two hours and a total of six hours of continuous online time after Microsoft releases updates for Windows to be reliably updated. This would allow for a successful download and any background installations to restart or resume once a device is active and connected. " More information in the following article: Achieve better patch compliance with Update Connectivity data.

I stopped allowing automatic updates with XP and have followed the practice through W7 which I'm still using on two desktop machines and wife's laptop without issue to this day.
My own laptop is W10 but solely because it was designed for that and finding W7 drivers for key components proved an insurmountable problem otherwise it would be running that, still no automatic updates allowed though so on 20H2 19042.804 from Oct. 2020.

I read about the problem RA points out yesterday. I wonder how many users actually realise what's happening, or not happening. You would think that with all their years of experience they would have the update thing running smoothly by now. But no, so many updates these days have to have another update to fix what the previous one breaks. (insert laughing smiley here)
Like another, I still use W7 with updates switched off on two desktops and the wife's laptop.

Absolutely .. the old laptop served him well for umpteen years. Assembled/created in 2009 it had a good life .. The replacement Win10 (reconditioned) is at the repair shop .. the new SSD hard drive failed. I ask you 😔 .. less than a year old; fortunately under guarantee, so being replaced as I speak by the comp shop I got it from.

That was just bad luck. SSDs are not known for early failure.
