Whats the story behind them, is it just France, or is it an EU wide thing?

Found in Germany as well but that could be the Ikea effect.

We switched as it’s so much easier to buy square pillow cases. Just as comfy. Not the size but the quality that counts....

I remember on family holidays in Europe years ago having square pillows - and bolsters were still in daily use. I don't know if they still are.

We use square, rectangular and bolsters, but there was no space/choice in the poll for such extravagance.

I find that a standard double bed 1.4m x 1.9m is not really long enough for many Dutch guests of both sexes, using square pillows makes the situation worse.
I have never had a problem sourcing UK size rectangular pillows in France, LeClerc and the markets sell them cheap, Noz sell quilt sets with both UK size pillows but also UK quilt size (2m square)and Action sell good value quality UK size rectangular pillow cases.
Doing changeovers I much prefer having a square duvet, no more struggling when you realise its the wrong way round. The extra length of all the French sizes seems an extravagance to me and I'm told its so it can be tucked under the bottom of the mattress.

Does this vote indicates those punters with square heads?

I don't understand the square pillow thing. I only use maybe half the width of a rectangular one. If it is a square one I would have to slide down toward the bottom of the bed a bit to compensate and probably get cold(er) feet. The extra bit toward the headboard is wasted area. If I climb further onto it including shoulders then I would be more likely to slide off. Perhaps if I slept with a French woman I might gain some insight into what its all about.

Definitely a rectangular user here. Had severe neck problems when we first came over due to square pillows. Was also told off by a rebouteur for using two pillows As for sommiers aux lattes....don't get me started

I am a real fan of decent sommier à lattes combined with Didlydaldi foam mattresses.
That said I am currently sleeping very soundly with the above mattress on a solid base but the initial impression is not of comfort and that is what renters look for.

That might be what they look for, pcpa, but it's rarer than hens' teeth IM (limited)E of hotels, B&Bs etc. The ultimate in 3 weeks of nocturnal torture are Indian beds. I swear that they apply the principle of sticking nails through plywood to guest house beds
