plog On the other side, 12 years ago I was amazed by Lyon St. Exupery publicity proudly proclaiming flight connections to Paris, Marseille, Lille and Milan - all of which were also direct connections by TGV (and similar) from the station embedded in the airport.

I do think if you’ve got good infrastructure, and that includes TGV (or equivalent depending on nation) stations within the connecting airport then the idea makes a lot of sense, especially if the train takes you right into the city centre at the final destination, the train coaches have plenty of stowage space and it helps if the passenger(s) aren’t encumbered with lots of baggage. It looks like the story has made other outlets, and TBF to Schengenvisa the format is often the same elsewhere - slightly breathless headlines but some devil on the detail…this for example from Conde Naste: “One country leading such measures is France, which last spring became the world’s first major economy to enact a nationwide ban on short-haul domestic flights on routes where train journeys of two and a half hours or less exist as an alternative.”… …but read on and.. ”For now, not all French regional flights will be eliminated. “Exceptions [to the ban] will be made for cities that provide connections to international flights,”…….

A bit off topic, but I often went to London from Birmingham by plane. Main reason it was £30 cheaper. A bit further off topic...
£30 wouldn't go far for local transport at each end - twice.
