Thinking of having a holiday in May, I’ve had a look at the route planner and there are a few options, if anyone travels or has travelled that route glad of an opinion on best way to go. Will probably like to have a rest about half way for a day or two so again any suggestions welcome.

Give this a try - it gives you 3 alternative routes and recommends hotels along the way: www.viamichelin.com/web/RoutesWhen we travel down we like to vary the routes and try and stay off the Autoroutes - The route that takes you through Perigueux is particularly lovely in the Summer months and the City is a nice place to stay leaving you a relatively short journey on day 2.

No .. but have been nearish by, tho that was 20 years ago. Looking at photos a lot of development has gone on .. It all depends what you are looking for.
You could go a bit further to La Rochelle .. which is (used to be) a good place for a couple of days. Some great places to eat ☺️

Thanks Sue, I’ve visited La Rochelle, but although it is popular I don’t really like it, the port area and restaurants are nice, I seem to remember a pleasant park, but anyway after much deliberation I’ve found a place in the countryside not far from Bretignolles Sue Mer, I downloaded Google earth and had a look at various places, but it all got so time consuming I just chose there in the end. One thing that did annoy during my research was the time owners took to reply, and the fact that now it appears I have to bring my own bedding or pay even more, then I have to pay to have the place cleaned at the end of my stay! This is my holiday, or is it the owners holiday? I’d rather if they want to make these additional charges they just added it to the initial price, comments from any Gite owners out there?

Ah .. that is the very French way of doing a 'stay away from home' .. somewhat outmoded now but still persists here and there. Which is why you see ssome French cars loaded to the roof with bedding and towels in the summer holidays.
Visited Bretignolles many years ago but didn't stay .. it seems pleasant. La Rochelle has become a bit care-worn nowadays I think .. a victim of itis own success.
