Sitting in the garden having our apero we had a hornet that was very interested in our rosé. It wouldn't go away so we retreated to the house and it tried to follow us. A bit disconcerting.

You're sure it was an asian one? I haven't, thank goodness, seen one of those yet. We have a large number of European ones though....

We had an Asian Hornet nest on the underside of our hangar roof last year. We rang a local beekeeper and told him. He came round immediately and identified it as an Asian nest. Towards dusk, he came back with a helper, both suitably clad, removed the nest to a black bag and took the entire thing away to put into a freezer. No charge. Of course he did this to protect his many hives in the vicinity and as a favour to friendly neighbours. They are dangerous. Find pictures of them on the internet so you can recognise them. Chief thing is the yellow dangly legs. If they aren't Asian we've found the European variety to be fairly docile.

I wouldn’t go up to a nest of them, but they really aren’t aggressive to people. Keep calm and move away and they’ll most likely leave . They are dangerous to other insects not us.

They are not agressive to humans and do not fly at night unless there a bee keepers in the locality let them be they pick off many crop eating insects

They are not agressive to humans and do not fly at night unless there a bee keepers in the locality let them be they pick off many crop eating insects I would buy that advice for wasps and European hornets but certainly not Asiatic hornets. #And remember it is not just hives they attack (although that is probably easy pickings for them) they will attack all types of bee - solitary bees, etc. And these are at least as important for pollination as honey bees. Decimate the bee populations and you have food shortages. So sorry Steve, poor advice.

Both européen and asiatic hornets take bees. We've watched them doing it on a Cotoneaster in flower. Getting traps up early in spring to catch the queens helps, as does hanging traps near bee-friendly plants. Any combination of diluted beer, wine, and/ or syrup and jam gets their attention. Going back to the original post, taons definitely recognise an aerosol can. They don't stick around to read the label 😁

Having been stung by a hornet whilst I was sitting in my chair, in my house, not doing anything very much, I can assure you all that they DO and WILL sting regardless of reason! It was extremely painful for about a fortnight! They invaded my house. The nest was next door! I eventually found that hair spray was a great deterrent. I just sprayed, swept them up and flushed them away…

Ours must have just been visiting. Haven't seen it again. Fingers crossed.

Perhaps we should find another word for describing these creatures as Asiatic might be construed by some under certain circumstances to have racist overtones. Vespa velutina nigrithorax might be more appropriate!😜

We get lots of, what I think are, mud wasps. They have long legs and long wings. They are continually drinking from the pool. They are quite safe, will fly away if they see me coming. They look worse than what they are and some are quite big. On thé other hand I’m fed up with being attacked by flies. It’s been really bad this year.

I have been playing it for years. How do you rename that?
