One wonky staircase almost level again and is good to the eye. Fixed with a trolly jack and crow bar but how many centemeters was it out?

Seems the "ferry trained" builder in the second photo does not know the required riser height for each step. Make it look good but not to code.. Great workmanship/philosophy ..

What the "ferry trained" builder knows or doesn't know is irrelevant. More than likely the original constructor of the staircase wasn't worried about riser dimensions in a code that was some decades in the future. Back then, as today, there would have been little if any "inspections" to worry about.

Well unwonked Mysty. The stairs in older houses can be (like ours) with different tread heights. The top treads go from an even 16cm then 14 for the last top but one and then 16 again. I was told this was a trick to catch out burglars, who, not knowing the house would stumble and wake the occupants. In Kyoto, the palace veranda had boards with special loose nails that would rinkle when enemy samurai krept in, thus waking the guards up for a good bashing.

The first step was out by almost 16cm a couple of the steps further up had been adjusted but just held in place on one side by bathroom silicon. The last owner had concreted the entrance but did not manage to fix the stairs. We had to break the bottom riser as it was bolted onto a huge oak beam. It took a couple of hours start to finish.

What did you use the loppers for ? It would seem you are not tuned to Mysty's subtle referrence to action that will be taken to those with adverse criticism
