More common than one might think ourworldindata.org/suicideI wonder how many on this forum have close friends or associates have been victims of suicide?

The rate of deaths by suicide has not really fluctuated (per year world wide) by more than 2-3%; up or down for a long time...

My Daughter has had two young friends from school commit suicide and the viaduct in Dinan has had to erect a "high fence" on both sides of the road to try and stop people leaping off to their death. In West London we had two friends commit suicide over splits in their marriages. It is so awful for those left behind........

This is going to sound morbid but other than some photos the only thing I have of my grandmother is her suicide note.
My father also effectively committed suicide and I'm not sure my mother has ever gotten over it.

@tim. What age?
I suppose how morbid it sounds depends upon one’s experience as to how one views the subject. It has become apparent to me how knowledge and uncertainty are crucial factors in life.
I have been feeling incredibly morbid ages but I have never seriously considered suicide as a way out. It seems to me that there must be so much more to it.

I have been feeling incredibly morbid ages but I have never seriously considered suicide as a way out. It seems to me that there must be so much more to it. Late in life at 70, he'd spent nearly 10 years in constant pain with no real chance of any improvement and I think that persuaded him to take the action he did, none of us had clue including my mother which is probably why now two decades on she still can't forgive him. What has always puzzled me is that he found his mother after she killed herself so was aware of the effects that had yet that wasn't enough to stop him doing the same thing.

My thoughts are that those who commit suicide are incredibly depressed to the extent that nothing in life would help them. I cannot imagine ever feeling like this.
My episodes with depression have been treatable, and never final.
I also think suicide is a brave act for a person to do, which I could never contemplate. Life is just so precious. Death is too final.
It is also a selfish act, for family and friends close.
