One company, veissmann, is offering an air air heating system which simply links into you existing gas or oil fuelled system. Would this be an easier and cheaper solution to install rather than changing the whole shebang and perhaps cheaper to run? Any thoughts welcome.

Hybrid house heating systems (combining heat pumps, conventional boilers and potentially solar) are certainly worth looking at.
If you are talking about air to air (rather than air to water) there are drawbacks as the hot/warm air blown in the house relies on really good insulation.

I have looked at hybrid heat pump/gasboiler solutions. They seem ideal - except for the cost - 15000€ plus installation

Another is that the air is generally blown in at ceiling level. This is good for aircon, but not in the winter when it takes a while for the hot air to be felt at floor level - so you ideally also need underfloor heating. Air to air may not be the best post build heating source.

Most, if not all have a winter and summer switch(setting) - changes the direction of the fan rotation to blow down or pull up..

There's what's called a hybrid system - uses PAC most of the time but once temps fall the boiler kicks in to overcome the drawbacks of PAC. But try finding an installer - it seems to confuse the grant system - or it isn't common so it can't be right....
