A French friends messaged my OH yesterday, asking if we could bring some Dijon mustard with us when we travel on Saturday as she had tried all the local shops and could not find any.

Yes none here either.
But of course the reason is simple.
The worlds largest producer of mustard is.......................
Russia.

The problem seems to be the lack of mustard seeds in France .. the crop here has not been good here for about 3 years. Canada's crops have been devastated by the wrong weather. India is a major producer too .. not sure what's gone wrong there. Russia is a major producer but ..

Not just mustard. Cooking oil limited to 2 bottles per customer in Intermarche yesterday. Guess we’re going to have to go back to........LARD! 😵
On a more deadly serious note it’s looking like the Russia/Ukraine war is going to result in some serious global food shortages soon....

The head of some "world" organisation recently announced that the world is heading for a shortage of so many food products that famines are on the cards for many poorer countries and shortages and/or big price rises everywhere. The reason? The Ukraine war. I had no idea that Ukraine and Russia were feeding the entire world.
And of course inflation rears its ugly head because in the best capitalist free market tradition, when there's a shortage of something the profiteers' knee jerk reaction is to jack up the prices everywhere to suck up more money from the situation. If the money men weren't so keen on getting stuff from countries with the cheapest labour force and sending it around the world as cheap air freight or on massive ships with half a dozen crew maybe things would be different. One country taken out of the chain might not affect the rest of the world's economy. Example: China for whatever reason cannot keep up with the demand for microchips affects new car sales around the world. If more countries made their own chips China wouldn't have such control of things outside its own borders. Have a Google about where some crucial commodities come from. You'll see how delicate the economic balance really is.

Laughable really that you can't buy mustard, hardly a diet staple Unless one lives in France. Salad Dressings, Mayonnaise, Croque Monsieur and an ingredient of Steak Tartare immediately come to mind.

I had mustard on my shopping list anyway, but then saw gigi's thread. When I went to the local U, there were only two jars of seeded mustard left. Normally I think twice about taking the last of anything, but no one else seems to return the favour, so I bought them both.
Then on to Intermarche for items I can't get at U. They had no mustard whatsoever, so someone had been there buying more than normal.
