After 42 years myself and DW have bought a suitcase, the first one we have owned, what a minefield, what a choice. As I don't fly we got a fabric one, we are only going for a week this time but five weeks next year, so got a large 108lt one, wanted a Samsonite but very expensive, so after a bit of research found out "Americantourister" are owned be the same company and made in the same factory, so collected it today (another story) and very pleased with it, its only going to sit in the back of the truck so it will have an easy life, and not subject to carousel baggage destroyers

If the no flying is because of an interpol issue you can still get caught if your passport is scanned. ☺

Congratulations on your purchase, I’m going in the opposite direction and buy the smallest, lightest one I can find, it will occasionally get knocked about at the airport, so very cheap is order of the day, also must have four wheels.

We've had American Tourister luggage for a few years now. We tried the very light stuff you can buy now but tended to go through one every couple of years because of damage.
The AT ones have had similar punishment but no damage. Just a couple of kg heavier than some others. We're very pleased.

Small is fine but cheap rarely works in the longer term. as a regular traveller I had such small carry ons. I lost count of the number of times I was invited to put my bag in the hold as the plane was "very full". "Ah but it's got my laptop in it", rarely cut any ice. "You can take your laptop out sir". The result was that cheap cases rarely lasted a year. The 3 x the price Delsey or Samsonite lasted a minimum 5 years each.
The one time I did succeed in retaining the case was when in addition to the laptop, I declared medications and important paperwork. Having extracted them all from the case and creating a rather tall and unstable pile on the empty seat by the entrance to the plane. The stewardess gazed into the case to see 2 x shirt, 2 x pair of socks and 2 x underpants. "Oh go on then you can put it in the bin."

Top tip: When purchasing a new suitcase, weigh yourself and have the result inscribed on the case. You'll find the suitcase is easier to close if you put your weight on it.
