Possibly some historical reference to a box containing a few farthings annually donated by the rich elite given to the starving poor. Doing no more good than salving their version of a conscience. You are correct there Aardvark, large houses would give the staff a christmas box a bit like a christmas hamper (see Downton Abbey), some Estates also used to distribute the boxes to poorer member of the community.

Not consciously, it was shipped from China with free delivery, those shipped from France were double the price plus silly money delivery, I didn't think they were serious & suspected it was just to make you order from the China sellers.
Got some other stuff today that had been recieved in France & then grouped & reposted, Sinotrans if I'm not mistaken, I've had stuff redirected by them before.
This package had a big red return to sender label except the return address had been handwritten as my address, the delivery address, the motive ticked was FD, the only abbreviated one but I don't know what it means, the others were non reclamé, refusé, adresse incomplète etc.
I have a feeling it might have been my facteur working the system knowing that I wasn't going to be paying the €9 for the other one, he seems bien rodé.
The customs declaration had been filled out correctly, value €4.88

Long before I recieved the avis de passage asking me to pay the import duties I had raised a dispute for non delivery as it had already gone well beyond the delivery estimate, Ali-Express said to wait as it was still inside the buyer protection period.
The packet remains at the local La Poste as I wont be collecting it and had written off the cost.
Today Ali-Express judged in my favour and ordered a refund from the seller, mind you that has happened before and it was not fortcoming but as they had closed the case there was nothing I could do, in this instance it matters not.
