Is that the end of it all now? I have been sick of seeing or hearing football football football all over the TV and even radio for weeks now. Enough is enough. At least with forums I can avoid clicking if the thread title is clearly about football, or tennis, or cycling, etc.

As a big football follower and former top level referee I think I am qualified to say this:
- Italy were the best team (except for a few antics against Belgium) throughout the tournament, so sometimes the best team win. Unluckiest team for me - Denmark, who played some excellent football and really should have beaten England in the semi-final.
- As for the final England reverted to type, once the Italians woke up about halfway through the first half. Trying to protect a 1-0 for 88 minutes is never a good idea. Some English players never got into the game, notably Mount, Sterling and Henderson when he replaced Rice. Rice by the way was arguably the best English player on the night and yet he got taken off, surely another bad decision by the coaches.
- Penalties were awful, why players do that stop and start during their run up is beyond me. The 3 that did it (2 English and 1 Italian) missed, or the keepers saved. I do wish there was a better way to decide matches than penalties, but I have no idea what!
- England were lucky to get to the final.
- They beat Croatia 1-0, and only the goalkeeper kept them in front.
- They were lucky to not get beat by Scotland, who arguably were the best team on the night.
- They beat the Czech Republic again by a slim score, against a team who had already qualified and had nothing to play for, but again caused England problems.
- Germany - Now there is a conundrum. 0-0 for 70 minutes, England score and again try to hang on. Germany had two excellent chances to score (and you would have expected Muller to score with his normally) before England scored just before the end.
- Ukraine was the only game when England showed what they can do if let off the reins by the coaches. The first 20 minutes of second half were the only time England really showed their attacking prowess.
- Denmark, again very defensive and only got through thanks to Sterling cheating and getting a penalty in extra time.
- The referees now have Sterling marked down as a 'diver'. It was clear in the final that every time Sterling went to the ground the referee just waved play on. Sometimes he was probably fouled, but now he has a reputation.
I watched all the matches live, except for the last round of group games when both matches were played simultaneously, so I had to pick a match to watch every time.
As were are in France, a word about the French. In my opinion they were one of the best teams, however against Switzerland they were awful for the first hour. After Lloris' penalty save they woke up and showed what they can do and scored three goals in quick succession. Then they beccame arrogant and thought they had one, a very bad trait on a football field. Treat opponents with respect, even if you are beating them 10-0. The Swiss caught them taking it easy and found a way back, and eventually won on penalties (again penalties missed with the weird stop start run up).
Back to where I started, the best team won, congratulations Italy.

Can we get back to normal now, svp? Which means watching Cavendish et al climbing blooody steep hills on carbon fibre, screamed at by idiots all to stand on a podium and wave. But what a podium and what a moment.

Spot on Crabtree. Italy were the best team and deserved the title. I thought starting with Mount was wrong. Penalties were rubbish but that has to be the fault of Southgate and his choice and timing of takers. England had a good path to the final, if they couldn’t win this tournament then they never will have a better chance. Why did Southgate try to hang on to the lead second half ? I thought the officiating throughout was superb except for a few bad calls mainly by the English refs. Michael Oliver isn’t up to it imo. I thought the two men of the match were Bonucci and the Dutch ref who had a blinder. I suppose Southgate will be seen as a success by the FA problem is, who would replace him ?

Kuipers is a very good referee, but he is coming to the age limit now, so won't be around on the world stage much longer. There are a few really good referees at that level, but some are much too full of themselves, no names no pack drill!
As for having Saka, age 19, take the fifth (and probably, which it was, decisive penalty) that is bad management. Although I think one of his 5, Trippier went off in the second half, so perhaps he had a decision to make, and got it wrong.

Bad management? It was heartless of Southgate, and having been there once, he should have known the consequences of a young 19 year old, and black at that, if he missed.
I cannot stand the intensity of the game, but that poor chap, I fear he could be scarred for life.

Apparently Grealish has come out and said today that he wanted to take a penalty, but Southgate preferred Saka. That is the coach's role, so I wonder if any more will come out like Grealish?
