I’ve got quite neat feet my toes go down in size quite well. Mr T of Italian descent has got a funny misshapen big toe also inherited by our daughter. A search of the inter web reveals that differences in the way your toes grow relates to where you come from. I’ve recently done a DNA test on one of the main research sites which gives me 50% Irish and 40% Scottish ancestry, which matches the pattern of my toes, an interesting but useless fact for you all.

That’s really interesting, traveller.
My feet aren’t very nice to look at; they used to be extremely narrow and it was difficult to buy shoes that fitted well, but they have spread as I grew older.
My husband has problem feet, or, rather, one foot; he had an ingrown toe nail when he was 15 and the nail was removed and the end of his toe was sewn underneath, so he had to learn to walk again as the feeling was in the wrong area.
When buying shoes he has to ask for that shoe first and if that foot is comfortable he’ll try the other shoe on, but very often his foot isn’t comfortable, so shoe-buying can be a bit fraught.
Interestingly, my father also had an ingrown toenail, but when he was 70+, and despite having it attended to twice weekly at the hospital for many months, he ended up having his leg amputated. His father and brother also had legs amputated quite a few years before, and he was in the same ward they had both been in - and died in. All 3 had been very heavy smokers and had very poor circulation - not that I met my grandad or my uncle as they both died before I was born.

Up until the age of 10 I spent most of my time outside barefoot, but once I went to boarding school, opportunities became rarer. The holidays were again barefoot, even driving when I was older, but once I moved to England in the early 80s, the climate wasn't at all conducive, so since then shoes rule.

Mine look Mongolian, though my dna is almost exclusively European. I also have syndactyle second and third toes, which run in my mother’s family.

Problems with my feet probably originate from my desire to wear winkle pickers and chisel-toed footwear in my early teens. Probably not helped by dropping a lump of metal on my foot sans safety boot.

Mine look "African", though my DNA came up with a hefty dose of Norwegian among the English/Scottish/Irish blend!

Here is another. On second thoughts, not so much interesting,or useless ftm. In fact it it remarkable, but strewn with problems as I can not illustrate it as I would wish to. In the last millennium I went on a canoe trip with a load of mates down the Murray River. Think Deliverance, only with about half a dozen guys in the bush all wearing thongs. I took quite a few pictures of the company. One of my mates was a draughtsman and enlarged one of the pictures using some photocopying device and then traced around the salient outlines in the result and then photocopied the image again. It was a memorable piece of artwork. My friend had not followed the outline faithfully but had accentuated certain features on the characters in the picture. The one that represented me had claws rather than toes. There is a lot more to the story, I will enlarge upon it if I can find the picture.
