Carole Cadwalladr followed how Brexit was gained: I have a huge respect for Carole Cadwalladr .. her TED talk on the power of Facebook, Twitter etc to influence people's opinions was clear, well-balanced and frightening in its implications. This article seems to follow on from that. Her research capabilities are astoundingly good at digging and finding the real truth, not the 'truth' pedalled by the likes of Trump, Farage and so many others. My Wife and I have the utmost respect for her, she had many sleepless night over Arron Banks suing her but she held firm and eventually won the case. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/jun/13/arron-banks-loses-libel-action-against-reporter-carole-cadwalladr-guardian-defamation-brexit-russia

Arron banks, like Nadhim Zahawi is just another example of a bully boy using influence and money to avoid being held to account.

Just though I would update you with my impressions of the UK after essentially a 6 year absence. Overall mixed. Lovely to see my family again. Went to the theatre, a 70s soul music venue, walking on the South Downs, a vegan restaurant...all lovely, lively..great atmosphere (although I found the UK expensive..but probably when all things taken into account about the same as France). Mixed bits were.. public transport.. wonderful to have some, and when it works it was great but doesn't always work. Staff were great, doing a shit job in difficult circumstances but with humour. People I encountered in London were great, Sussex less so, and Bedford definitely not! Traffic and people everywhere..even in the country. People walking dogs everywhere. Cars everywhere.. M1 and M25 in rush hour was moving but a little too fast and with no space between the vehicles. Terror even worse because our driver was OH's 75 year old uncle who talks all the time. I shut my eyes. London seemed quieter than I remember, other places were busy. Still have to book everywhere outside of central London if you want a table in a restaurant. Negative..everywhere is bloody filthy. Litter everywhere..buildings dirty, public toilets filthy. Overall, the people on the whole are great but the country deserves a better government than the one it has currently, and needs a better one if it doesn't want to sink further into the cesspit.
Our of interest in and out of France I was asked for my passport and my French carte d'identitie, and the security at the BA check in were scanning all passports and if you booked your ticket from France asking for French Carte de Sejours.

Thanks for the input. Sounds like UK is similar to when I was last there. Apart from the toilets. When I was there there were none left in service.

The uncleanliness of the streets is what has hit me over our last 2/3 visits back to the UK. In November leaves were pouring off the trees so when we went back in the middle of January I had expected them to have been cleared away but they had been left to rot which meant the footpaths were dangerous to walk on in the rain. Here the commune spends days/weeks clearing leaves and trimming trees which is neater and safer.
I should add that the public transport that we used both trains and buses were great, reasonably priced and on time. Everywhere was busy unlike the 'ghost towns' in rural France, clearly the 'cost of living crisis' hasn't fully hit yet.
