Well it is that time of the year again. I'm off this afternoon to have my retinas photographed for damage caused by my (under control) Type 2 diabetes. Hopefully it will be all clear yet again. However, it is raining heavily but because of the eyedrops used I cannot drive to the hospital and back. Only a 2 mile walk and I have an enormous umbrella so all will be well.

My check-ups always make me a bit ‘antsy’! A huge umbrella sounds a good idea on days like these. Hope all will be well.

I have the same test annually in France but this year I'll have no one to drive me back. It's a 40 min drive both ways. I'm hoping the ophthalmologist will give me a bon de transport. I did ask the secretary but all she said was ask on the day. Bit late then !

No, only the specialist you're seeing can issue it.

Is the problem with your pupils being dilated for the examination with the lampe à fente? They reckon its OK after a couple of hours, I drove back around the M25 in the dark evening rush hour traffic about an hour after the examination and it was pretty scary, it was not intended I had turned up for the consultation at the East Grinstead clinic, a comfortable 10 minute daylight drive on quiet country roads only to be told that I was mistaken and it was at Ashtead Leatherhead I also drove home after a retina operation that I was not expecting, I had gone for the post op check up and they whipped me straight back in to the operating theatre to put right what they had got wrong the first time, and then I got billed 100% for the op I should not have had but the first one was 100% prise en charge. I didn't really know what was going on in those days as my French wasn't good enough, it was the wake up call for me, I believe the charge for the second surgery was because it was under a plafond of (then) around €1600, if it were a mechanic or builder I would not be charged for them to put right their mistakes! Well they would probably try though! Nowadays I am much more on the ball regarding getting a bon de transport, after being released from hospitalisation for sepsis the Consultant who was showing off in front of the stagiaires refused to sign a bon de transport citing that my condition did not warrant it, it was minus 5°C, snow on the ground and I was wearing socks and sandals on my feet and a sweatshirt, I also did not have my wallet so could not pay for a taxi or train, I had to walk 30 minutes to the station, charm the ticket inspector on the train and then walk another 30 minutes at the other end. On checking I was 100% correct, I was absolutely entitled to a bon de transport after a hospitalisation even were I in tip top form let alone as weakened as I was. Now I get everything sorted in advance if I can but when accidents happen or the médecin calls an ambulance to take you straight to hospital its not always possible. I will be having eye surgery again soon and will try and get everything sorted in advance especially as I will be temporarily blind in the operated eye (I am already blind in the other) and have no-one at home.
