They are probably right , but so long as the world governments can keep the populations inebriated , it is a win/win situationfor them and the pharma industry.

I'm firmly on the side of the traditional French idea of a glass of wine with a meal being good for you. Can't drink the stuff during the day, though, so one glass in the evening does the trick (and very rarely two when it's been a particularly bloody day). It seems to be working so far...

I agree with that , but "with a meal" are the key words . Never been to an apero without food, except at Brits houses.

I’m British but I’ve never had neighbours or friends of any nationality over for aperos without providing food - haven’t been for aperos with French, British, Swiss or Spanish friends that didn’t involve food either.

Is there a stipulation about the size of the glasses?

Is there a stipulation about the size of the glasses? Ah, there’s a thought - I’ve seen adverts for bottle-sized glasses for sale! 😁

Apparently so ..
Quote : "In its measurements, the CCSA considers a standard drink to be a 12oz (355ml) serving of 5%-alcohol beer, a 5oz (148ml) glass of 12%-alcohol wine or a shot glass of 40% spirits."
So those are more the UK size wine glasses than the French 125ml.

Around here - admittedly a small rural community, the French don't seem to be very fussy about glasses. I have been invited for many aperos where the wine is just poured into any available tumbler.

It's much the same round here. The municipal 'do's' use plastic or paper tumblers There's something soooo special about drinking from a really fine glass. Even the vin de pays tastes better Well, apart from Côtes de Marmandais. Best used as drain cleaner
