That’s a big price. I have no idea about the possible costs except that I have seen several reroofing projects near us and would assume that they were cost effective. In your example I doubt it would be worth doing unless you were the builder doing it for yourself. I was very interested as we may need to be able to present a better looking roof to potential buyers in a few years time. A standard roof with normal mechanical tiles or slate would be half that price or less. The stone tiles are like doing a jigsaw and very time consuming.

Well that makes me feel better. We would probably just need to retile a portion and replacee some of the timber, but not much. Fortunately the building is a group of three attached cottages knocked into one. Their roofs divide naturally into well defined sections so we could concentrate on the worst area. Are you still considering that house in the photo?

I am due to get up and redo my roof as soon as the weather is a bit kinder, I have all the gear (and no idea!) now so no more excuses.
5 chimneys to be removed and the openings made good, I can see some tiles need replacing, judging by the amount of water that has been coming in for over a decade there will be rotten timbers.
I have been up there once to look before buying but the hatch is so tiny you have to lift yourself up to squeeze through from balancing on the very top of a stepladder, I do not dare go up on my own in case the stepladder falls, once inside you have to crawl through tiny slots about 12" high in the masonry fermettesseperating the 3 parts of the roof.
First job is to cut a proper opening for an escamotable loft ladder picked up yesterday, not simple because the ceiling is concrete over plancher hourdis but at least it hasn't rotten & collapsed like a timber & plasterboard one would have.

The reason I quoted 110k was because I can remember visiting a old house in the Dordogne which had large stone slabs on the roof, and being told that the cost of redoing the roof was 2 to 3 times more expensive than your average tile roof. Looks like it wasn't an exaggeration.

OK, that's the shed done. Now how much to do the roof on the house?

I don't think so. These are no ordinary roofs.

I was wondering how you got that price we had a house last year we sold and could not get any local roofer in the Cantal to give a quote to re roof in the original stone.

French owned house and French estate agent and roofing company. It was the owner who got the quote. You want Prix anglais. 😁 15000 for a new standard fosse fitted by inglish on FB.😱

Are you still considering that house in the photo? Yes but would only offer half the asking price. Very few people would pour 70k into that property. All you could do is lose money.
