Thank you hoopla. I suppose it makes sense that extreme temperatures will affect all living things.

They do as long as they're not moulting or suffering from shock. Oddly, they seemed more prone to going off lay during the heatwaves last summer, but that can be linked to a red mite infestation. Ours have stopped laying maybe two years ago. They are very healthy looking and free range during the day. Useless buggers but we still do our best to keep them safe. Haven't been able to find the usual chicken sellers in the local markets since the lockdown. Hoping to get another pair after seeing the price of eggs in the shops.

If not, perhaps they are laying but they've discovered the joys of eating their own (or each others) eggs. It only takes one 'accident' when an egg gets broken for them to make the connection and it's a devil to stop them once they start. Plastic falsies in the nest boxes only work if they lay in nest boxes and not all over the hockey Have you got any outbreaks of avian 'flu round there? The sources of good layers have been severely reduced here because of that. You need to muscle in on the countryside grapevine! At a pinch, the Gamm Vert outlets sell them, but at eyewatering prices.

I know how to deal with them all now. I've found that it's stress that causes broodiness with mine. It's always been the lowest in the pecking order, i.e. the bullied ones, that repeatedly went broody, never the others.

Does he look that contented?
It was supposed to be for Houpla who might have forgotten something. In line with the thread name I have had to return home in order to get my teeth sorted. Within half hour of our arrival an estate agent called to inspect the premises. Found a load of mail from the last two months that has caused us a degree of panic. Thought that we may have to give up the flat as owner seems to be looking to sell. I thought it was going to be imminently, but, research has found that things look ok for the next three years plus, by which time I am reasonably sure that I will have things of greater importance that moles on my mind.
More bull sh1te almost certainly, should I sill be around and not have gone completely lady ga ga.

Thanks, Nifty Lovely photo! I like moles and they're the least of my worries in the garden. I take the view, though, that a) they've got 40ha of fields and 10ha of woods to romp around in..they don't need my bit, and b) it's taken me 15 years to introduce some soil fauna into the garden, including tonnes of manure, compost, straw and shreddings so I'm damned if I'm going to let them gobble them all

I suppose it's the extremes of heat and cold, drought and excess water. And the odd tempête I researched the weather before we settled on this département and it didn't seem so harsh then, but not many plants relish the current conditions and it's heartbreaking to see unhappy plants. After coming from a country where such a huge range of plants thrived, it's a bit dispiriting. Still, mustn't complain, hein? The weeds do excellently

No worries mate. Except that we will be raided by the police and they find the weed out the back. if you think chicken sh1te is a problem then what about bats? or, if you think chicken sh1te is a problem, then, what about bats? I say, bring back capital punishment.
