We are looking at pellet burners and wood burners for a house we are restoring later this year. Not sure which way we will be going. This pellet stove looked nice but not much to it and a bit flimsy but pricey.

Yes but it looks like a wood burner, you load the pellets from the top.

Wood burners are at a premium price at the moment , wait till the Summer , the price should go down a bit .

You get what you pay for Mysty. I would be very cautious buying a woodburner on line without seeing it first . Also buy one that takes 50+ cm logs , saves a lot of phaffing about .

I prefer to see something before I buy it but everything is changing and one day most of us will have no option but to buy online. Ours had a lot off the price and if it turned out to be crap we could have put it in a house we were selling. 😃 50cm always trumps 30cm.

We put in a wood burner a few years back. Many of the shops selling them could not show what they sold. We eventually decided on one where the shop did not have one in stock but arranged for us to go to a client who had just had one that we liked installed.

An even more excellent idea would be for a shop to actually stock and display the products they sell. Mysty Mk3 is right though, the world is changing around us and many of the French DIY stores are part of chains either owned by or including many UK outlets like Kingfisher. Over a decade ago Dunelm Mills was the place for curtains, probably still is, but only to go and look at them, don't expect to be able to buy a pair in the size you want and if like me is was for several windows you have no chance, you go and choose from the display, maybe take one curtain of the right size home with you to show your partner (and there will only be one on the shelf, not a pair) and then order online for home delivery or collect from store. That has now transferred to France, I went to the huge Leroy Merlin in Périgueux, there used to be tills the length of the frontage, albeit often unmanned unless they were busy, all now removed and replaced by 3 self service tills, only 3 and no staffed tills the place was full of people but not at the tills, they were all couples arm in arm choosing decor styles & colours, the staff were run off their feet answering dumb questions from people who once they had them would not let them go, I'm sure they dream of being on the tills again. Having decided to only use them now as a last resort the final part of the jigsaw fell into place last night, their delivery costs either to your door or a point relais are next to nothing, I need a 63cm door (double the price for 14% less material ) the delivery cost to my door for next day delivery is €2.50 none in stock in store and if I order for store collection I would have to wait 2 weeks. I ordered a tiny plastic shaft for the thermostat on my caravane frigo, less than an inch long and 1/4" wide at its largest point, delivery charge was €7.50, it was sent in an envelope with a timbre vert, I could not even send a letter with more than a couple of sheets of paper for €2.50 and that amount of diesel would get me 1/4 of the way to Leroy Merlin. Also if you look at what they offer on line but not available in store its quite apparent that 90% was and never will be sold in store, they have become an Amazon for the marketplace of DIY suppliers, it's cheaper for them to ship direct from their distribution cantres than to the stores where they incur the building overheads and staff costs, cheaper still for the suppliers of larger stuff to ship direct like the shower tray I have on the way. I'm sure very soon they will have far fewer but much bigger stores in the big cities only or at retail parks near autoroutes like Ikea, and those stores will have even fewer self service only tills. They don't want you in their stores any more other than to browse.
I was wrong with the delivery price it is €4.90 to my door or €2.90 to a point relais 4km away.

Progress sucks sometimes. Its looking like people who used to work in those outlets stocking shelves and manning the tills will have to find work driving the delivery vans.

In the description JohnnyD it mentions Pierre Ollaire which google translates as 'soapstone' , which wiki claims has a high heat storage capability . Interesting.
