Saw a Hoopoe in the garden today - about a month earlier than we've seen them before. Has anyone else seen them in Charente yet?

We thought that we had heard one this week , but dismissed it as not being possible , too early . We were probably wrong !
Saw a swallow this week at a friends farm .

Is this a portent of exceptionally fine weather to come? I hope so! We will returning tomorrow after our winter break in UK. We are lucky to be in an area where hoopoes are quite common, in season, and we watch them scouring the drive, car parking and the orchard. Beautiful birds, particularly with their crests raised.

Is this a portent of exceptionally fine weather to come? Nope, it is a portent of climate change.

The last bird my husband saw on the morning before he went into hospital was a hoopoe, crest up looking wonderful. It was on our front lawn, and we both marvelled at it and the wonder that is nature. It will always be special to me for that reason.

Is this a portent of exceptionally fine weather to come? Nope, it is a portent of climate change. That is what I thought when I saw the Grues returning north so soon after they went south.

It looks like a lot of the migration is changing , we noticed that the swallows had left early last year .

No Cuckoos yet but while having this mornings brew a Hoopoe walked across the front of the patio doors, so yes I think they are early, but there is a cold snap heading here next week.

What do the Hoopoes and the Grues know that the Cuckoos don’t?
