Being extremely unlikely to follow the head of government, few ask for change like this hothead! (3,6)

Being extremely unlikely to follow the head of government, few ask for change like this hothead! (3,6) Guy Fawkes. Head of government = first letter of government = g. Extremely unlikely = extreme (first and last) letters of the word unlikely = u and y. So g followed by u and y = Guy. Change (anagram) of 'few ask' = fawkes. Hot head gunpowder plot plotter = Guy Fawkes

Well done Veem! - that was a very difficult and complicated clue. TBH, I find the cryptic clues totally bizarre and illogical, I can't get my head around them at all. Although I sometimes manage to guess the correct answer to the simpler ones, I always guess them from the straight part of the clue and only after I know the answer can I make sense of the cryptic part …and sometimes not even then!

You're making great strides if you can fathom which part of the clue is straight. Sometimes, as you say, that's enough for us to guess the answer. Also, sometimes it might only be the first clue in a whole crossword which hasn't already got a few letters already filled in on the grid. Doing them in isolation, like we try to do on here, is more difficult.

Correct FFA. Magenta cliche poses mixed threat to planet, (7,6) Magenta cliche is indicated to be an anagram by the word 'mixed' and 'threat to planet' is the straight part. Your go.

Correct, Veem. 'Articulated lorry' = TRUC (sounds like - 'articulated' - truck) 'uncle crashed' = ULENC (anagram) 'in front of church' = CE, though now I've explained it like that I see that I originally thought the word was spelt with 2 'c's.

And now you've pointed that out, I realise that I didn't spot a c too many either!
