What do you call wall anchors for screws in French?. And is there a type of screw, or perhaps wall plug that expands to help anchor a screw? I know they exist because my husband used to use them, but I don't know what I'm looking for amongst his kit in the workshop. It's to help my sister who has an electric heater that keeps falling off the wall because the screws just fall out. Thanks in advance to those who reply

You should look for something like these in the photo. (Beware.. the one on the far right is only to be used in plasterboard.) It should bang in tight and if it does not go all the way in, you can slice it off flush with the wall using a wood chisel.

@ Mangetout, back in time when Chris-le-bricoleur published almost everything you want to know about construction techniques in France, in English, German and Dutch. Also about wall anchors and screws. Not in English this one, the pictures are self explaining and will make it easier to buy something in a brico shop. Hope this helps.

For radiators fitted to plasterboard walls we would always hang them with mollies. From your description of "keeps falling off the wall because the screws just fall out" it would suggest that either the screws are a size, or two, too small for the plug you are using or the plug is not fitted deep enough. Bon courage.

robertarthur's second link is incredibly complete and despite the language is very useful. I didn't see anything listed there that I would trust to hang something heavy on plasterboard. I usually resort to using butterflies. Something like this.

The very first question to ask is what is the wall construction that you are fixing to, the type of cheville or anchor will vary according to whether it a placo cloison, placo doublage with a solid wall behind, parpaing, brique creuse etc.
There is some overlap and many fixings can be used for light loads on several supports, for a wall heater especially if its an inertie type you really need the best fixing so have to start with what type of wall it is.
My apologies if you have already stated it, I cant see to read well at present.

@ Aardvark, see pictures 18-11 and 18-12 ( pages 5-6) for heavy loads and plasterboard.

Best not to assume anythig and start with the wall construction and heater type.
Even with plasterboard you cannot assume it is BA13 because doublage isolé uses 10mm plasterboard which gives a very weak fixing with those chevilles which are excellent in BA13, I use a high glass reinforced Nylon equivalent.

Thank you everyone for your help and advice. It's my sister I'm trying to help. All she said was that the wall was hollow, so I'll have to go back and ask her to be more specific.

Yes to the electric heater type, and plasterboard I believe.
