This morning I noticed a strange looking sbb feeding on the ground in my car parking area. Using my binoculars I realised I had never seen such a bird except in my collection of bird books. It was a WRYNECK which is very rare in UK but probably more common in mainland Europe. The descriptions of the wryneck fits exactly this bird.

A form of woodpecker. I've had one in my garden, just the once, not seen it since.

I have read that they are woodpeckers but spend most of their time eating ants while on the ground. This one was having a feast on our ant population. I wish something would turn up and eat the moles that are causing havoc in all parts of the garden.
