Barclays. I had been with them for over 50 years. I did have my private pensions paid into them.

Barclays. My first ever job was working for them and I'd held an account for 60 years.

Barclays and the b@rstewards made life as difficult as the possibly could*. Failed to act on instructions sent by letter and then insisted that I give them authenticated proof of who I was and where I lived (clue it's the address you sent the letter to) so that I could transfer my funds to the bnk they were instructed to send it to on the day before closure.
* I do accept the business case for the closure. I don't accept the way they have failed to respond to requests.

I'm not so sure there is any "business case" for dumping expat customers apart from the great disaster called Brexit. UK losing certain associations with EU banking must have been a benefit to those at the top of the food chain. I hope those who voted for it are enjoying all the benefits of their stupidity.

I asked the question because yesterday I found out that Sainsburys bank had closed my credit card account last July. No notification. I presume it's because I haven't used the card for a long time, but no explanation was given. No great loss but I would have expected forewarning.
Then, after an horrendous morning with Natwest when I had to make 4 telephone calls to get my address altered, I was told in a throwaway remark that if I continued to live in France my current account would eventually be closed. Unfortunately none of the four advisors I spoke to seemed to have a clue about anything. I despair with banks these days.
Has anyone had a definitive answer from Natwest about closures for expats?

More evidence that the bankers are playing fast and loose with your money. Perhaps you should try to open an account with Coutts.

Barclays gave a friend no end of grief making it all but impossible for him to get his money that they had taken when they closed the account, another one who had banked with them since school and for.
It would appear that Santander are safe although you cannot have any investment accounts unless UK resident, Nationwide seem OK at present but not being international like Santander I would not have the same confidence that they will continue tolerating overseas clients.

Another vote? for Santander. My Barclaycard is registered to a occasional UK address.

While Santander seem happy to keep its EU customers, it does not (AFAIK) allow EU residents to open an account in the UK.
As for the business case for closure of accounts: post Brexit, UK banks have to register as a business in each and every country in which they operate - not cheap to do just once, let alone 26 times over.

Has anyone had a definitive answer from Natwest about closures for expats? No. They seem to be holding firm for the moment and are not committing themselves one way or another, other than to say that they are closing accounts 'only if they absolutely have to'. They seem to be doing it in batches - depending on the country. Quote from Redit :
Yes it's location based. And yes, it's done in batches, a couple of countries at time. And yes, one of the Brexit dividends.

It is probably too late mangetout but you could challenge that , as it should be against their own internal policies and procedures to close accounts without warning. Hsbc/Firstdirect did it to me, and although the account remained closed they have been sorta nice to me after I threatened to report them to their own compliance and audit departments.
