Great work Lpta. It's good to see how others are getting on with renovations, mysty has been hogging the limelight lately with his skills, so seeing how others do it is educational. Anyone else got some work to show us? They can post quality but I can beat them on quantity. It is good looking at other work very few people are still restoring on French forums.

Apart from Mysty&Co I know of very few others getting their hands dirty apart from gardening. I do enjoy seeing other people's projects and solutions to problems they encounter.

We have owned our house for 10/11 years and we are still renovating. We said it was habitable when we moved in, but renovations/repairs are ongoing. We are at present taking render off our gable end house wall and re-pointing the stone work. (we have done 4 exterior walls since lockdown in between working and accidents). It is very much diy (needs must). Does work ever stop unless you buy fully renovated or pay someone to do the work for you?

After 32 years, a lot of what I did then is looking worn. The house had been empty for seven years, everything needed redoing from the roof down . Now I prefer to do outside work , just finished a foot bridge and put in water to some of our meadows. Next is stonework ,on an out-building, but there is no hurry , we are comfortable.

That's odd. Unión Matériaux is celebrating 100 years and Castorama 60, how old are you? 😃

There was one Castorama shop , that had a small selection of " stuff" , it was 55 kilometers from us, now we have builders merchants and brico whatever in every village. Never heard of Union Materiaux , I used to buy from the nearest quincaillerie, but they had one or two of each thing and most things were very outdated. Now you can buy a complete wired up electric unit !
It took a while before they reached the France profonde.

Apart from the local, expensive Bricomarché, we only had Casto in Agen (50kms) or Leroy Merlin in Bordeaux (100kms) while renovating. The nearest quarries are all about 35kms away. A huge part of our costs were swallowed up in delivery fees. What we should have done was sell the removal lorry straight away and buy a tipper lorry, but hindsight's a wonderful thing.....

There was one Castorama shop , that had a small selection of " stuff" , it was 55 kilometers from us When we moved into our rented house in 2005 the outgoing renters told us there as a small Casto 30kms from us - which there was, but it didn't have much, certainly nothing compared to the UK DIY stores we were used to. But, we were told, we were lucky as a LeRoy Merlin would be opening soon .. and it did. Not only was it closer - about 22kms away but bigger, brighter and much better stocked than Casto. Casto moved a few years later to huge new purpose-built premises but slightly further away from us than they had been. There is also a LaPeyre now in the same area. Times change.
