Although 500 sounds a lot for a day's work that's cheap for a good artisan. You can pay 300 a day for a bog standard labourer.

Our devis for some electrical work came in at 1 hours work at 85€ plus tva at 10%. Plus, of course, the necessary materials. Artisans are not cheap. He lives close by but he will have to travel to obtain the parts needed - they are not standard everyday stuff. It is what it is.

Yes. Decided to accept this estimate to keep life simple and maintain my relationship with chauffagiste. Get it done and move on.

to keep life simple and maintain my relationship with chauffagiste. Good idea .. a good artisan can be a treasure. Our electrician came yesterday to look at the problem and, if he was going to accept the job (he's choosy), to see what he would need to resolve the situation - repair or replace was included in the ensuing discussion. He was here well over an hour and did a thorough examination of our, occasionally bizarre, set-up. He modified one or two small things so our installation would conform and prepared the way for his return to do the job we had asked him to quote for. Received the quote less than 2 hours later by email - we provisionally accepted by email. My OH popped the signed copy of the devis and a small cheque in his letter box this am on his way to the déchetterie. We have discovered that the son-in-law of the first owner of our house fancied himself as a diy-er. We have been uncovering, and correcting, quite a few of his misguided efforts over the years.
