I've been watching on TV a programme about how a coroner (uk) reaches the decision about cause of death. It's fascinating, but, if atheist what do you swear on?
They have Bible's,Korans, the old testament and many others depending on faith. But,what if you don't believe? What would you swear on?

I understand that you would ‘affirm’.

I am a Christian. A Quaker. I always affirm. There is no ‘book’ for me.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy I agree and it's probably as close to the truth

Gigi is right, In the UK at least when giving evidence on oath (and that can happen on lots situations , not just in the courts, I’m aware of it being required of witnesses in some accident investigations) there is usually the option of making an Affirmation.. Affirmation

When I did jury service I asked to affirm..which is making a statement 'on your honour ' rather like the French system. I could never do anything meaningful in the name of some religious doctrine, so affirmation seemed obvious to me..However the court officials seemed surprised that I asked to do so.
