I had a warning message come up on my screen today saying top up water levels. I have a 2002 Citroën Picasso 2.0 hdi. As far as I know there are 3 liquids that may need topping up. Windscreen wipers. It's full, did it 2 weeks ago. Brake fluid, clearly full. Coolant. Looks low, so I presume that's it. Can I just top it up? I bought the stuff but when I read the Citroën manual, and look at YouTube, there seems to be differing instructions. How do I do it. I know it's nasty stuff and I need to be careful.

It's an easy task. Normally the windscreen washer tank has a wiper picture on it and a simple cap. The plastic tank for the radiator is easy to locate. Open it up when the engine is cold and top it up until you get neat the top line or at least get a good amount in. Tighten the top up when finished. If it's hard to open use a glove for extra grip if you do not have a funnel cut a plastic water bottle and pour it in. It's not that toxic.

Apart from not drinking the stuff, the only thing to remember is don't allow drips or splashes onto paintwork. It can damage it. The actual procedure of topping up differs between some models because the top up tank is sometimes not the highest point in the system and there will be a special procedure to bleed air out of the rest of the system. Our 2001 Peugeot is one such example. We took the option of having a garage renew the antifreeze when we bought a pair of new tyres at the same time. Worthwhile because the old fluid was at least ten years old.

It was difficult to get the cap off but I managed in the end using a strap wrench. I might have overfilled it a bit because it was hard to see the max line, but hey ho, I've done it. Another 1st. I'll get the garage to completely replace the coolant when I have it serviced in Sept.
