A new road layout has just opened near Perigueux (24).
Will it catch on?
By the way, it is not April 1st.

As someone who cycles I like it and can see potential success. I can see it working if there are intelligent/reasonable cyclists and motorists. Unfortunately this is not often the case - especially round here in summer. Incomers in cars cannot forget their dash-for-it town/city mentality and many of those who cycle have little idea of how they should be behaving on the road i.e. riding 3 or 4 abreast on a normal road and making it almost impossible for drivers to pass them safely.
So, I'm not sure.

There is a road like that coming out of Confolons along the river, but is its a bit wider.

I was about to say the same thing, cernunnos. Personally, I find it strange to drive along it. There is no doubt where the cyclists are supposed to be and they have quite a generous lane. For other traffic it feels as though there's not much clarity when we're either straddling lineage or, when overtaking cyclists, taking the wider central lane which still seems too narrow to accommodate vehicles coming from opposite directions.

Our local village (dept 22) has had this in place for a few years now, it is a tourist village by the side of a lake, not dissimilar to the video, it causes chaos as cars try to push through and cyclists ride 2,3 and 4 abreast, by elevating the priority for cyclists, they have taken total control, also the village centre has priorite a droite which also causes chaos.

It reminds me of a section of the A12 in Essex that was 3 lanes wide. The central lane was dedicated to people in the other two lanes wanting to overtake. Such was the amount of traffic on the A12 that it was always a game of "chicken" for those brave (or stupid) enough to attempt to use it. I don't see how this French idea ever got off the ground, given the trend for overtaking on blind bends, etc.

We called them “suicide” lanes for good reason. The ones in our region in U K have all gone now.

I find it totally ridiculous. If it is not intuitive as this is not, then it will confuse and potentially cause accidents. The designer must have recently been sacked from building french websites and he/she is useless at this as well.

Funnily enough Confolens has also introduced the priorite a droite at what used to be a simple T junction where there was a turning off the main street. There's no roundabout and each of the 3 approaches to the junction has been narrowed at strange angles. This makes it difficult to exercise your right to have priority if a vehicle on that road is allowing you to move, but actually blocking the way!

I am positive the local car repairers are behind the priorite a droite, there is a Y junction, where the zone starts, there is a building obscuring vision to the left, so you literally have to poke your nose out and hope that no-one is coming, all very well for most of the year but in tourist season it is a free for all and then just a hundred metres, the three lane cycle route starts... apparently the priorite a droite harks back to a time when horse drawn carriages had the priority going up a hill and turning to maintain the momentum rather than stopping and then having to restart but it is years since I have seen a horse drawn carriage in the village. The cummune re-introduced it about 6 years ago to make it more touristy and nostalgic... There is also a town nearby that replaced a T junction with a small traffic island, chaos for years and they have now gone back to a T junction.

We have a road like this leading up to the hospital in Saumur. It's the only one as far as I know. I don't have a problem with it. It's obvious how it works and most folk seem to get along with it fine. The strange thing is that the road is at the top of a very steep hill and you don't really get many bikes up there, so I don't know why they did it.
