We have a house with a 1973 oil boiler which looks like it's had a few new parts over the last few years. I tried starting it but it blew a fuse. Got a heating engineer coming this afternoon to see what it needs. We bought new radiators yesterday so they get fitted today. I know nothing about oil boilers normally just fit new electric ones.

If you click the picture its a 1973 model if you know nothing about boilers no need to. I had a company out yesterday who said there is no power going to the boiler so just opened it up and said its too old and not worth repairing. The house was rewired and I forgot I had switched the fuse of that supplied the boiler as it triped the fuse when you switched the power on yes a complete dummy that should not be allowed out on his own. Anyway, I got an sparky out who tested the pump and cables running to the boiler and there is no short circut he says he has a friend who might be able to help but that is normally what people say when they just want away. I went back up the the heating company and explained the power was off but he said not to waste money on it and for 15000 I could have a new type of boiler fitted but not oil. I could buy a second hand boiler for 300 but I think its illegal to change them now although you still see ads for new ones. Does anyone have any idea if it could be something simple to check that could be causing the short. You do not even get to press the start button it trips as soon as the power goes on.

Don't give up. My boiler is at least 45 years old and runs perfectly. Anyway, the buyer can get a govt grant to replace it if push comes to shove, if they are resident and relatively poor

I have seen the ads for grants still trying to find someone to look at it.

It's illégal to install a new one. But you can repair an existing one, including replacing with a second hand one😉

We have just had installed three (3) new condensing boilers in some of our apartments complete with a bung of 800+€ from the Gov for each one.

My new boiler 100 euros gets picked up next week, 14 years newer and in perfect working order and I even like the colour comes with all the fittings pump and exspantion spelt wrong tank. Just need to find someone to weld a pipe. The boiler in the house has the hot water pipe welded with no bolted joint. The new one has a threaded joint. Thanks for the advice and help. Edit a slight mis calculation last night. Not enough fingers available. The old boiler was built in 73 the new one is a 2007 build.

That will warm you twice, Mysty, the expected way that boilers are meant to, but the cheery cherry colour will warm you - and cheaply too, just from looking at it. 😄
