..but it's causing confusion.
Among my english speaking friends, threy tell me they're being approached by SFR, who say they are the telecoms company operating the fibre, and if you want it, sign with them. (Though the visits aren't inspiring..)
Doesn't sound right. Surely the network is open to any telecoms company? (And there are stories of FT/Orange contacting (ex)customers and talking fibre.)
SFR plus cable apparently offer internet speeds of 800Mbit and upwards. However, I'm happy with FT/Orange - I have an internet speed of 105Mbit, which is more than adequate, so I see no need to upgrade.
But, if it's cheaper, and easy to change, why not?

I have always been with SFR and despite a catastrophic change to fibre (which I didn't really want), have stayed with them. The main thing I would suggest is that you ignore the people coming to the door (they are on commission) and go to the shop of the people you wish to to go/stay with. The SFR shop in Saintes said most of the problems would not have occured if we had gone through them. Misrepresentation (lies) and a lack of explanation from the the agents visiting made for a very stressful time. Long and numerous phone calls , never to the same person with often people who did not have french as their first language. The "guy who came to "instal" the fibre had difficulty with his french (first language arabic) and the quality of his work was shite. Very unwilling to refit the outside wiring which hung like whore's drawers. I could go on. Despite all promises we are now paying more. Mais à part de ça, tout va bien.

This is now our problem too .. having rec'd an email from Orange (we are with their online sub Sosh) saying that we now have access to fibre. Two days later a ring at the gate bell .. 'Jeremy' from Orange offering us a 'free' installation with them. As I was cooking at the time I declined his invitation to sign up then and there.
So now I am considering who to sign up with. OH doesn't care who we are with as long as the Internet works

Round here, (47), Orange are sending salespeople to do a presentation at the Mairie. I checked their site regularly to be told that only ADSL was available but apparently fibre has been an option for some time. The rep offered a 'special, one-day-only' price pm and free installation. We declined and when we got home and checked, it was actually dearer than Orange's standard deal Also only applicable for a year and with a minimum year's contract! We're quite happy with our Sosh package and will only switch over nearer to the copper cut-off date. Why pay twice as much when what we've got now is quite adequate?

They fitted fibre to us last year, and the usual sales people came around I think we had three or four different ones, I asked the same question "Do you have an English speaking helpline" the answer is no, bye bye. Admittedly don't use the Orange one much but getting technical with my limited French is a no no.

"The rep offered a 'special, one-day-only' price....." I learned long ago that when someone says "one day only", or "limited time offer", or any other such hurry hurry tactics it is always a ripoff. It used to be central heating, then double glazing, then insulation, etc. Today it is broadband "deals".

People, many thanks for the replies. Very interesting...
Based on what you say, here's my plan. If I'm cold-called by FDR, I shall politely decline. Stay with what I've got for a few weeks (perfectly adequate), then see what FT/Orange cn offer
Thanks

Ian ..
There are quite a few comparison sites .. here are a couple : fibre.guide/offreswww.ariase.com/box/offres/fibre-optiqueBut if you are getting 105Mb at the moment then you are very OK. We have about 6Mb on a good day with the wind behind it
You don't give an indication of where you live Ian .. getting that speed already you are, perhaps, not far from a big town ? Would you like me to add your department to your profile ?

What we did! When fibre was 'opened' here we were already a SFR customer/client for both ADSL, approx 19Mb, and the OH's Moby with approx 50Mb, 29.99€ + 19.99€. We hade the usual door steppers and 'phone prospectors for a few weeks or so from the other players, but waited until SFR called us directly. When the call came, from Algeria, we were offerd the base package, 500Mb?, right from the off with, of course, free installation, we said it was not a good enough offer. We had already decided that, because of the off site University work we do, that we wanted 1000Mb as our base figure. Their next offer was for the same, but for the same price as we were already paying for one year. As they seemed to be trying hard to keep us as a customer, we pushed a little harder. We eventually settled on 2000Mb at the same price that we were already paying, 29.99€, with the usual unlimited call and texts within France and the Doms, 200? countries international 'phone calls and texts and MMS, 2 x 4K TV receivers, a new 'box' with WiFi 6 and full installation and, possible important to some, setup of all the reliant ancillaries. All that and a fixed price for two years but with a fidelity discount of 15% for one year. The OH also received an additional SIM giving her 2hrs of calls to mobys in the UK per month and an increased data limit of 200Gb for 14.99€ a month.. All in all we are happy bunnies.

@ suein56 - that's perfect. Thank you @ Le-Dolly - a cracking deal. Well done. Seems to emphasise the wisdom of waiting, then dealing directly with the supplier of choice. Thanks for the story.

We've just had very similar, our French neighbours have called saying there is an Orange Salesman trying to sign us up to Orange Fibre on a special one day only deal. We are also with SOSH and pay €19.99 per month for approx 70mbs so very pleased and we have what believe is above ground cables in the road leading to our house so we believe we have it already after they installed it some 18 months ago. They sent him away and said he was very polite, it doesn't make sense !

We had all the above but everything was an increase in payments with no increase in speed or otherwise.Orange then sent me an email saying I could have the fibre at the same monthly price which of course we said yes,I would say wait.

Too many ripoffs out there waiting for an easy mark. We never ever sign up for anything pushed by a door to door saleman. We don't even take the Watchtower before telling them to F off.
