It would be appreciated if anyone receiving Freesat on a line south of Poitiers down to Angoulême could indicate the dish size being used. I suspect a 60cm will be marginal but an 80cm satisfactory.

Our secondaire is about 80 miles east of Poitiers and I suspect we are further into the edge of the footprint than you are. Many years ago I started with an 60cm dish and it worked extremely well until the footprint was tightened a few years ago. I ordered a 100cm dish on the internet and it was delivered to the house. It took about a week to mount it on the atelier wall with a clear view of the satellite but I started with it on the lawn, outside the salon just to prove it would work. It proved to be wonderful giving 100% for signal strength and quality across all channels. It is quite a daunting task to carry the dish up the ladder and locate it on the mounting. I am certainly glad I put in the effort and we have perfect UK TV even during distant thunder storms. For local electric storms I disconnect the dish feed in the hope that no damage will be done using the extra large dish. Perhaps you could try a 80cm dish which is probably much more manageable.

The recent changes to HD channels has IMO also pushed the choice of dish at a marginal location towards the larger size.
I am too far off your line to give any sensible response on what size you need but my guestimation would be to go for 1m if you can.

I used to live near Ruffec wherea 60 cm just about served the purpose but nowadays I would be comfy with an 80 cm.

A useful location but was that before the tighter beam came into action? Nonetheless, I think 60cm will be too small for consistently good reception so 80 it will be.
Thanks to all who responded.

There is no reason why a dish cannot be mounted on the ground if you have space and a suitable location. Much easier to set up and adjust. A few extra metres from the satellites won't make any difference!

I couldn't see the point in doing the ladder thing, etc. so I did the same, only several metres away from the house (buried the cable in a small conduit) and painted the dish in a dull camouflage green. It is barely noticeable and very handy for maintenance. Lots of trees on my patch so a used a hand bearing compass to select the exact spot.

A few extra metres from the satellites won't make any difference! That is very true and rather simple to understand. I do not want to keep the dish in my front garden close to the house or at a distance in the “cricket pitch” for obvious reasons. My array of dishes are in a most suitable position on the workshop wall hidden behind the house. The height off the ground is simply to allow an uninterrupted line of sight to the relevant satellite. They look between the canopies some enormous trees so I was lucky.
