I'm shocked by this. I thought charging sick people/those visiting patients in the UK was so wrong and was something that the French would never put up with. Never say never.

jardiniere, many French hospitals now have private car parks, even if they weren't before, all the hospitals and clinics I know in Rennes are pay for parking car parks. Our local hospital in Dinan is free but there are never enough spaces. It is how it is and some hospitals as seen on the video charge astronomical prices!

High charges reduce demand. There is no such thing as a free car park as, somewhere down the line, costs are involved!

Not sure how high charges reduce demand? If you have a rdv you have to be there. Free car parks are rarer than hens teeth but "taxing" the patients is how many see it as immoral. No one goes to a hospital car park just to park up without reason. I think what the video shows is just how high charges are in some hospital.....

People find other means of transport? Why do some people who have a car feel the right to free parking wherever they go?
The only way to free or cheap hospital parking is taxation i.e. increase contributions to the health system. Oh! you mean NI (UK) contributions - no way! They should have gone up many, many years ago but successive governments failed to grasp the nettle hence the appalling situation in the UK health system today.
There are two major factors involved in hospital car park pricing, the space and cost to provide and maintain it, and the contribution to the health service fund from any profit made.
My local hospital car park charges. It's pay on exit so no guessing how long needed on arrival.
Patients and visitors should be aware that parking is extremely restricted. We strongly encourage you to consider using public transport or being dropped off at the hospital instead. If you are arriving by car, please allow an extra 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Drop off and up to 10 minutes Free Up to 30 minutes £1 Up to 2 hours £3 Up to 3 hours £4 Up to 5 hours £6 Up to 6 hours £8 Up to 12 hours £10 More than 12 hours £20

Sorry but I have no idea where you live in France, or maybe you do not, as you quote in pound sterling but are you fully aware of bus services out in the countryside of France? Not only is it impossible to get from where we live to the hospitals that we might require by public transport, having a car for us is of the utmost importance. The hospitals we are using also charge on exit with a free half hour to allow for picks and drop off but go over half hour and the charges rack up pretty quick

beejay and Omegal .. it would help (all of us) if both of you would give some slight indication of where you live in your profile.
....
Vannes Hospital has (I think) an excellent system. Take a ticket on arrival then the first 3 hours are 'free' after that there is an escalating charge. But if you have a genuine reason for needing to be longer than 3 hours then a waiver can be sought from 'Accueil'.
Emergency stays are free in its own carpark, barrier on entry with a code needed to exit.

All the major hospitals/clinics in Angers have free parking, with the exception of CHU which has free parking for those with appts and a limited number of paid spaces outside the perimeter for visitors. Saumur hospital is also free. The problem for hospitals in cities and large towns is that parking is abused by people who are looking for free parking.
