The TdF will be coming to Bayonne on 3rd July.. (note to self: must remember to put on a clean vest! ) Prior to arriving here, it will be striking Saint-Jean-de-Luz a glancing blow - followed by Ascain. This was the village where we spent our summer holidays for about 15 years.. it recharged our batteries to enable us to survive another English winter. The long flog down from Calais was worth it. We stayed at the small hotel / restaurant just left of centre at 0.35 (next to the church) - it was idyllic: Nutty

For the first t8me in many years we will not be in France for the whole TdF. I usually get to at least one stage. This year it will be a poor substitute watching it on UK TV.

I’m looking forward to it . Pleased to see Cav’s favourite lead out man,Mark Renshaw, has joined with him at Astana for Cav’s last tour and hopefully he will beat Merckx’s record. Shame that Frome has been dropped.

I was pleased to read that Astana have hired Mark Renshaw to manage the lead out train for Mark Cavendish. That may give him a decent chance to improve on his record achievement provided the Belgians do not deliberately set out to block him. Renshaw usually manages to get MC through the traffic.

Froome is unlikely to get back to full fitness before he finally retires. At least he can look back on his successes achieved while in his prime and before his horrific accident.

And Egan Bernal is riding for Ineos this year after recovering from his 50km crash into the back of a bus. Several breaks in spine plus fractured femur, ribs, patella, thumb plus two punctured. lungs. In all 20 injuries and he was given a 95% chance of being paralysised. A tough cookie - chapeau

Does anyone know what happened to Mark Renshaw? I have just studied the riders in all the teams for the TdF this year and Cav does not appear to have a recognised lead out as a team mate. His best bet is to get on the wheel of Michael Morkov and pretend he is on the same team.

My OH is a fan of Cav. We are delaying our departure as the tour will be blocking out protected route on the day. She says that she thinks Renshaw will still be advising.

Thanks Nifty, that may well be his role as he must be past his best as a rider. The report I read could have been conveying that information and I misconstrued it. Morkov was of course his more recent partner with quickstep and was brilliant.

Lurcher, I also saw the report about Mark Renshaw, I'm pretty sure that it said he would be on the support team rather than riding.

Stage 4 was won by Philipsen, again, and it showed the essential nature of having a strong, fast lead out partner. Van de Poel provided the precise support that Cav needs to achieve a stage win. He did in fact make a pretty good job on his own.
