There are 7 fireplaces like that, all different colour marble and slightly different styles.I'm so glad they were still here when we bought this ruin. Notice that there is a window in the place of the chimney, clever stuff, warm yourself in front of the fire and enjoy the view.

Nice floor what did the T + G cost. 22 minimum a sqm now for a basic pine floor in most places.

Yes Mysty, the chimney goes up to the right of the window in the wall and it draws very well (when there is not a temperature inversion, the cause of the blackening around the surround). The floor is oak and not cheap. 30 msq made a hole in my pocket. The quality of the oak is very fine, but its manufacture into boards left a lot to be desired. Width varied up to 2mm ( sometimes it varied over its length leaving a small gap at one side) so I had to collect enough of the same width to make a complete row each time, there were not many short lengths, thank goodness, but the thickness also varied about a millimeter. You may notice the handle on the left of the fireplace, this is the mechanism to close the shutters as they cannot be reached over the mantlepiece (especially if the fire is going) the bedroom above the salon has the same arrangement but opposite setup.

I wondered what that was for, every day is a school day.

What a beautiful floor, and a fascinating way of closing the shutters! I rather think we’d find a guided tour of your house and the watermill a treat.
