I’ve witnessed the start of 2 riots. The first was the Poll Tax demo in 1990. Myself and my friend happened to be in London that day and encountered the demo by accident. We thought we’d follow them to Trafalgar Square. So far so peaceful and a good atmosphere. Got to the square and listened to a few of the speeches and then started to make our way to the tube. All of a sudden a man appeared shouting ‘You’re all a bunch of effing fascists!!!!’ and almost instantaneously the atmosphere changed and it all kicked off.
The second time was at a 4th July fete a local US army base used to hold. One minute everyone was sitting around on the grass eating hotdogs and enjoying the sunshine and the next minute a fight broke out amongst a group of people and in the next instant loads of others joined in! We then decided it was a good time to leave and found out later it did indeed turn into a riot. Probably not a good idea amongst armed US military personnel…..needless to say the sale of alcohol at subsequent events was banned…
Perhaps something in the human psyche? Who knows…..what was striking was how fast the violence spread, like a kind of mass hysteria……
