I wrote a long description of the problem but failed to post it. Here is a short version. Lost power on ring main, checked wired fuse and found burnt and melted fuse carrier. Problem was a worn through wire touching the metal fuse box cover. The fuse carrier was unusable. I cleaned up the wires and swapped them to another fuse upgraded to 30A. All running now but a new distribution box with mcbs and rcd will replace the 1950s fuse box. The attached photo hints at the potential disaster.

You were lucky there Lurcher! We bit the bullet and replaced our mains electrity control panel a few months ago. Our previous one was showing its age - probably 1950s vintage. The new one has 23 circuit breakers and it took a while to identify all of them. We should have had this done much earlier - but, as is the way of things, it got shunted to the right all the time. Glad it's done now.

Yes, very lucky and I will be replacing that CU rather quickly. Fortunately the cable tails are cut generously long so it should be a straightforward task.

Reminds me of an incident that happened a few years ago while we was living in the caravan, one afternoon we lost all power, checked the MCBs, tried them individually still kept tripping, checked and re checked electric bollard, all ok power there, checked another lead no joy, so started stripping out the inlet plugs male + female, male was good but on opening up the female there was a cremated small caterpillar that had got inside somehow, and then wriggled about until it broached the neg and pos terminals, one crisp caterpillar, short circuit solved.

Thanks for the link LeD. I knew they existed but my immediate problem was that not only was the fuse wire holder burnt and broken but so was the individual plug in base unit. As a stop gap answer it would certainly have been a step up from the existing single fuse outlet. I am as secure now as I have been for the last 30 years so I will plan carefully, buy all the component parts and wait till I have a clear, all day run without interruptions.
