You can do what you like below the gravel and it won't make much difference. The grass and weed seeds arrive on the wind and are happy to root into the gravel surface. Then your options are either weed killer (now expensive and less effective than it used to be) or a gas powered flame gun. Oh, and you will need a leaf blower to clear the autumn leaves if there are any trees nearby because a rake doesn't work well on gravel.

It is now four months on so perhaps we can have an update on the job. If you are still with us Quilbert, how did it all work out?

Hi
We've still got some finishing to do - bedding in some stepping stones, and a second wave of planting - in the Spring, but we're really pleased with it.
A little tip which we found effective was to mark out 1m2 and pour the gravel in to the depth you like, then it's a simple matter of scaling up and you can be pretty sure you're not over-ordering.
We're glad to have finally found something that works, as it's a really difficult little area (uneven slopes in both directions, needing access to various points both on foot and with a wheelbarrow), but very visible from the kitchen window.
