I'm finding lots of conflicting info on the web, is there a reliable way to calculate how much gravel you need to cover a given area (just for ornamental purposes)?
The bloke at La Maison said 50kg per m2, but didn't ask which type we were interested in, nor the depth we wanted, so that seemed a bit broad brush. Quite a few websites seem to suggest 50kg per 1.2m2, so maybe not too far out.
I was hoping that the calibre of each type of gravel/stone - 10/30 for the stuff we're looking at - could be used in some kind of calculation to arrive at a figure, but that doesn't seem to be the case?
Grateful for any guidance / experience.

Calculate by m3 what you need , then ask the trucking company how many m3 in their truck, the weight is not important.

Grateful for any guidance / experience. As it was a first for us we relied on the advice of the excellent company we bought the decorative gravel from .. they asked for dimensions of the area to be covered and suggested a figure. My OH wanted more and the company said that would involve a huge camion and extra transport costs so OH caved in. The amount they suggested was 100% perfect when it was laid - by us

And I imagine that was backbreaking work.

I think most of ours was zerovans. Took a bit of time for me to understand that was the gravel size - 0-20. We did get some larger gravel at one point but I found that it’s not so safe to walk on as the stones sort of slide under your foot. As we have so much of the zerovans we also added in a section of pebbles. It works quite well as the colour of the pebbles breaks up the zerovans. One drawback of the zerovans is the amount of dust it generates and therefore, by default, ends up inside the front doors and then everywhere else!

And I imagine that was backbreaking work. It was. It was also during a spell of good weather in March so OH and I were wearing t-shirts and shorts. Neither of us would be capable of doing that now .. and it was only 9 years ago.

Come on Suein 56, I'm sure you can still get into tee shirts and shorts.

Come on Suein 56, I'm sure you can still get into tee shirts and shorts. That'll learn me .. 😉 Yes I can and do .. I'm wearing t and shorts today as it's 33° .. better than the 35° of yesterday. At 35° I have to wear a dress 😊

, the weight is not important. Unfortunately, it is when the stuff we've finally agreed on is sold in 25kg bags.

The amount they suggested was 100% perfect when it was laid - by us I think we'll take his 50kg/m2 as a guide, and call in and just buy a couple of 25kg bags & see how it spreads before we do the bulk order, I don't mind being a few bags over or under at the first pass.

Yes, we've got small gravel elsewhere and we're constantly picking it out of our shoes. So after almost twenty years of not knowing what to do with this annoyingly awkward space, it's going to be shale, some stepping stones and a small planted area with tough (walkable) ground cover plants.

Unfortunately, it is when the stuff we've finally agreed on is sold in 25kg bags. We had 10 tonnes delivered on a lorry and tipped where we wanted it tipped so we could move it in our own time. How much are you expecting to buy ?
Edit : Just read you are buying a couple of bags as a 'look and see'. Good idea as usually/always cheaper to buy in bulk if a large amount.

How much are you expecting to buy ? If I've calculated the area correctly (!), it'll be 64 bags. Obviously a more expensive way to buy than loose, but a lot easier to move than shovels & barrows, especially given where the space is located.

I calculated that we needed 10 tonnes. The quarry only sold a full load which was 14 tonnes. The driver reversed into the courtyard and did 2 passes tipping gravel as he went.Made life a lot easier for us, with help from a couple of friends we had it spread in about 3 hours. The beer didn't half taste good
