It's confusing. Who has the phone and where is it?
It is usual for a new sim to be used in the UK before it can be used abroad so has this been done?

I don’t know. OH is at Tescos the supplier of the card as I write this. I hope she returns with a serviceable phone. OK. So I can be a bit of a dreamer. I really can’t imagine how I have lasted this long without the confounded thing : > &…………

it's still confusing! You have the Tesco sim abroad (Switzerland/France?) in a Tesco handset? Your wife is speaking with Tesco mobile in the UK?
It's a usual requirement that a UK sim must be used in the UK before using it roaming abroad so, was this done? The foreign provider that the Tesco sim will roam with won't recognise the sim until the UK provider has it activated on their system.
I suggest you try a www.1pmobile.com/ sim that has roaming at UK rates of 1p minute and 1p text but data is expensive at 1p meg (£10 GB). Initial top up £10 lasts four months unless used up earlier It's a roll over, no contract sim, and stops when a top up payment is not made when due. However, the sim can be re-activated with a top up if required several months later.
