OH is getting another car so a good time to look around at insurances,not necessarily the cheapest but one that is good value and good service. Any recommendations please?

With OH having just written off our 8 year old Duster*, I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised with the reactions from AXA (certainly not the cheapest). Very professionally handled although the loss adjuster was a little slow to turn out to confirm what I and the garage had expected.
It does however I think depend on the people you deal with directly. We have a local Axa office and the team (2 people and in reality mostly handled by one front of house) really do give the impression that they care for you and will for example ask if a medical problem has been sorted when we go in to renew the house insurance. So that may well not be a representative view on the company's performance.
* Driving down a narrow forest mountain road when a deer leapt out onto the road. She swerved instinctively and hit a tree: On a Saturday so perhaps the deer had been lifted by hunters.

Thank you, Exile. My BIl hit a deer and did a lot of damage to the car but fortunately he was OK. Hitting a tree sounds even more dangerous but it's instinctive to dodge.
AXA is one of the companies we are re-investigating. OH had all insurances with them initially and the service was excellent - as you say, due to the individuals in the agency. The manager was really helpful then he left and his replacement lacked any customer empathy! He was discourteous one too many times so OH took all the insurances away within a few days. He left shortly afterwards so I imagine others had followed us.
As you say, they weren't the cheapest but it was a pleasant experience to go in there. We will see what the newies in the local agency are like.
