For about a month now we've been seeing a one-legged robin around the bird table in the dog playpen in our garden. Other birds settle on the wire fencing, but Robin always lands on top of the fence posts. Presumably he feels safer balancing on his one foot on a flat surface and he does a fair bit of wing flapping to adjust his balance. Yesterday he flapped a bit too hard and toppled off, but was back minutes later. Of course we have no idea how Robin lost his leg and marvel at what a plucky little bird he is. I hope he survives.

So touching. But that one-legged duckling would have been relatively easy to catch as it only waddled. Amazing to have been able to make a 3D modelled leg. In every other way, this robin appears to be 100% normal and we'd never get anywhere near him. I'm sure you knew that though Mysty!!

Strange this but the robins in the UK were far less timid, they would come really close when I was digging ready to grab any worm my work exposed.

So UK poverty extends even to the birds as they overcome their timidity to line up in the garden food bank.

Sadly, we haven't seen our brave little one-legged robin for months now. At least he fed at our bird table for quite a part of his life and I hope he didn't succumb to one of the cats ...............

Many years ago we had a one legged pied wagtail who flopped around our lawn feeding quite normally. It was only with us for one summer so I suspect it could not cope with the winter. It looked happy enough and certainly flew around with a few other wagtails. I hope your robin had a painless end and I am sure it appreciated your bird table offerings.

A few years ago we enjoyed the presence of a one-legged 'petite merle' one summer. It could fly normally and hopped round our garden, and the garden of our next-door neighbours, pecking at the ants in our lawn and generally seeming at ease. It wasn't hassled by any other birds so it was quite a shock when our neighbour said he had found its lifeless body in their water-butt one morning. It must have toppled in when having a drink and couldn't then get itself out.
The only consolation for us was it had been happy enough for a short while in our gardens ..
