My Humax box doesn't respond when I click the remote. The dotted line just keeps circling. When this first happened the problem was solved by disconnecting for a few minutes. This no longer works. Does this look like the box has come to its end? It's quite old. If so, any suggestions for a replacement?

Or has the remote come to its end? Is it sending an Infrared signal, not visible to the human eye? Use a mobile phone (with camera) or a digital camera, simple as decribed here by SONY. Or a case of one or two almost flat batteries. Cleaning the contacts in the battery holder might also help. Or a standard problem inside the box, defective electrolytic capacitors in the power supply, easy to fix for the more or less experienced electronics DIY.

Does this look like the box has come to its end? It's quite old. If so, any suggestions for a replacement? Does your Humax have any manual controls, usually on the front face? If so, eliminate the possible malfunctioning remote by using the manual buttons. The circling dotted line on my Humax occurs every time I turn it on but normally ends after a few tens of seconds before moving on to displaying the channel number. It always stops but sometimes just goes back to standby mode and I have to repeat the “On” command from the remote. Your idea to disconnect (the power) is good but sad it has not worked this time. Have you received messages recently that software updates have been downloaded? Maybe your device is in the process of installing and processing new software.

If you think you need a new box try Humaxdirect.co.uk they do new and refurbished boxes but hurry as it appears Humax has lost the Freesat contract.

I am now a bit worried about the possible problem of our Humax, simple tuner breaking down. It seems that the product direct from Freesat is a likely contender. Their website shows this device that could well be our choice of replacement. It comes with a few extra features that we have been without while in France. www.freesat.co.uk/get-freesat/set-top-boxes/recordable-4k-tv-boxI hope your Humax box comes back to life.

OK for you but would they ship to France? The restrictions - IoM and CIs suggest not.

I didn’t think about that. While we travel back and forth we rarely break any rules but I would worry about packing a brand new box delivered to UK. Thanks for the waning.

Not beyond the wit of man to remove it from the packaging and say it was a gift from a family member or something. Friends (or family in the past) have brought our UK free delivery ebay items on every visit. Unless you are bringing a van load of obviously for sale items you should not worry.
Related: Has anyone else noticed that when buying dometic appliances, tech. items, etc. here since Brexit that English is no longer included in the instructions? Not a problem with simple devices or to people with good language skills but its a bit of a faff trying to scan an instruction sheet with microscopic font size to get an OCR translation.

I was interested in reading your link, the author saying about the lack of quality control of Metronic boxes. I agree. I am on my third. They are crap but cheap. The dissolving exchange rate has scuppered my aspirations to own a Humax box.

If you search for something like "buy freesat box in france" you will find several companies supplying Arris, Manhattan and other boxes. The current Freesat 4K boxes are made by Arris. However to use the full capabilities you need a wideband LNB. The old LNB used with Humax and other Freesat boxes will still work

While idly combing the Aliexpress website I found a few Humax boxes there for sale. Around €42 but I have no idea if they are the models that people use here. No mention of recording facility.

Humax make boxes which are used in different countries worldwide en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humax I doubt the Humax boxes on AliExpress are Freesat boxes. Humax had a licence/contract to produce first and second generation boxes for Freesat but Arris won the contract to produce the third generation box and Humax stopped producing Freesat boxes.
