Is this the modern equivalent of an old chap between two sandwich boards wandering around warning that 'The end is nigh'? Is it worth putting the onion sets in, and sowing a new lawn, this October?

I’d say that there are too many variables to give any valid advice and that it depends upon where one is at, so to speak, and the resources one has and the weather. Not to mention that availability of onions next year.

I planted the same onion sets two years in a row but they never showed any enthusiasm so I concluded that onions just won't grow in my garden.

Onion sets became so arduous because of birds tugging them out that it became a real bore.

Tut! Here I am trying to establish when the world's going to end, so I can be wearing clean (any) knickers like I promised my Mum, and all you lot can do is moan about your lack of success with onions! Soil preparation is all I have to say to you! Balanced fertiliser, regular but not excessive watering and correct planting depth! On the other hand, you can nip to the local market and pick up sacksfuls of alliaceae for a few euros It doesn't sound as though we'll be needing big stocks anyway

If the world ends there won't be anyone else to complain about the state of your knickers.

One sackfull lasts us best part of a year when carefully stored. They normally sell sacks of spuds as well. Who needs the hassle of growing 'em when such good quality produce can be bought in bulk at very reasonable prices.

Reasonable prices might not last forever.

I remember you saying this last year. Johnny doesn't come to Charente. Generally I have to buy onions in nets of half a dozen or so, meaning I can't really feel them before I buy. I'm so sick of at least two from every net being rotten that last week I bought a Bio net which were far more expensive. But were they any better ..........................? Simple yes/no answer and the first of those is wrong.

Roscoff is just along the coast west of here but as much as I love their onions I have never found them very reasonable. It always depends on your available resources. The last time we shopped there were no French grown onions to be had. Only from New Zealand, so we didn't buy any.

I buy one of those massive bags of onions from the supermarket when they are season. I don't know what weight the bag is, but it takes up half the trolley and only costs around 3 euros. I make a few jars of caramelised onions, use some for the soups and chutneys...the rest get used for general cooking - I never have any left long enough to go bad!
I'm growing some red onions, they seem to have survived the wet weather - you can't beat home grown red onions and tomatoes....drowned in balsamic vinaigre and topped with fresh basil...

Interesting about onions. I've always had good crops with the over-wintering types but not recently. I think I may have used the ones you can get in the UK known as "Japanese" overwintering onions. Last year was a disaster BUT Lidle had one of those big bags last week mentioned by Crystal so now I am onion-rich
(However, my potatoes are all blighted.....)
In deference to houpla - don't you put on clean knickers every day? You should be ok

Reasonable prices might not last forever. He's at it again! We're doomed, doomed.... Ye Gods, if we can't be a bit positive and cheerful in August, there's no hope!
