I understand the seller has to check that the buyer has a driving licence. Do you also have to check that the buyer has insurance on the day of delivery?
I think checking of the driving licence maybe something new, just don't know about insurance?
Thanks for any input.

News to me too.I always make it clear that that the insurance is cancelled before they drive off. For the licence it would never cross my mind. Surely, that is their problem.

The steps mentioned by the French authorities don't include checking the driving licence or the insurance of the buyer. You should inform however you own insurance company as soon as possible. Starting in English: When you sell or give away your vehicle, you must hand over certain documents to the new owner. You must also notify the authorities using the ANTS teleservice: ANTS: Agence nationale des titres sécurisés. It is no longer possible to lodge or send your declaration of transfer to the prefecture. Here are the steps to follow. The complete step-by-step procedure explained in French: www.service-public.fr/particuliers/vosdroits/F1707

Whatever the legal requirements of it, the last car I bought from a dealer insisted on seeing mine and my wife's licences.

Thanks for all that. We had remarked at the time that the seller is actually doing the work of the 'authorities'. I can't remember now where I read it. Maybe it is something mooted. I should have kept a copy of that. If nobody else has heard of it, maybe not worth worrying about.
Thanks again.

Actually, just seen the response from LPT. Yes, we have just bought another car from a dealer and he did insist on copies of our driving licences, and insurance proof on the day of delivery However, we thought that might have been because it would be insured on their lot and not once we drove it off the lot.
The article which I read was in one of the publications I subscribe to but can't remember which one now!
The unusual thing (to us) was that the dealer just handed us the keys of the car to 'try' - we were getting our d/licences and ID out to give to them but they just said they were not necessary ... we had never been to that garage before!

I shall make a note of this although it is unlikely I will ever be selling to an individual. The next owner of my cars these days will be a breaker's yard.

I have looked into this a bit further. It seems the requirement for the PDC is to REGISTER the vehicle in your name, so the dealer (who was doing the CG work on ANTS) needs a copy of your PDC. Here is the relevant law which was amended in 2017. n°2017-1278 du 09/08/2017 So a private seller is under no obligation to confirm whether a buyer has the necessary permit. The article was in the Connexion. It was a lawyer in the article who said it was a legal requirement 🙄

A question for those who bought their car from the dealer and had to present their licence, who was doing the carte grise you or the dealer. As I said in my post above yours (in a roundabout way I know) the dealer.

Thanks for that info and the explanation which is now obvious! - simplifies our handover. Interesting you say it was in the Connexion - I read some of the articles if I buy the paper but am usually a bit wary as they have been known to get things wrong!!

As I said in my post above yours (in a roundabout way I know) the dealer. The dealer would ask for a licence to apply for carte grise as a third party. But I don't think an individual selling a car would have to ask as they are not applying for the carte grise.
